Quaker Down
Up next in my series of vintage sheet music finds, a couple of mirthful entries. They’re quirky, and they also share a lovely Art Nouveau aesthetic, lovely in the first and maybe a little overdone in the second.
First, this 1916 study in ethnography:
It’s about pining for a sweet (or, as the lyrics nudge, not-so-sweet) Quaker girl in “Old Philadelphia,” but to me it sounds like shorthand for a 911 call. *Crackle* We have a Quaker down in Quaker Town. I repeat, a Quaker is DOWN! *Crackle*
Second is this 1922 lesson along the lines of “If you can’t be with the one you love, honey, love the one you’re with.” Complete with ukulele accompaniment.
Now, the photo may not be all that clear, but I’m thinking this woman might just be a perfect match for her Cross-Eyed Papa.
Quaker needs backup!!
Is Quaker violence ironic or an oxymoron?
